The Grand Vegetable Emporium

Carrot was born orange, which was immediately suspicious because everyone else in his family was white. His parents tried to ground him — literally — but he just grew deeper.

One day a rabbit mistook him for a traffic cone and tried to report a traffic violation. Carrot didn't correct him. He enjoyed the authority. Now he carries himself with the quiet dignity of someone who knows he's good for your eyesight but refuses to let it go to his head.

His therapist says he has "root issues." He's working on it.

Broccoli was the middle child of the cabbage family and desperately wanted to stand out. So he went to tree school. He didn't graduate — trees are notoriously cliquey — but he picked up the whole "miniature forest on a stalk" look which became his signature.

Children everywhere have been traumatized by his earnest attempts to be nutritious. "Please," he whispers from dinner plates, "I have more vitamin C than an orange. Just one bite."

He's the LinkedIn influencer of the vegetable world — relentlessly optimistic, incredibly good for you, and impossible to avoid at family gatherings.

Tomato has an existential crisis every single day. "Am I a fruit? Am I a vegetable? Why does the culinary world get to decide my identity?" She's been in therapy since the Supreme Court ruled she's a vegetable in 1893 (Nix v. Hedden). She's still not over it.

Her passion is Italian opera. She cries easily — which is fine, because she's 94% water anyway. She's red because she's constantly blushing from the drama of her own life.

When asked about ketchup, she pretends not to hear the question. Some wounds are too fresh.

Eggplant is a brooding gothic poet trapped in a vegetable's body. He wears deep purple because black was "too mainstream." He spends his days composing melancholic haikus about the fleeting nature of harvest seasons.

"I am not a vegetable," he says, adjusting his non-existent cravat. "I am a mood." When grilled, he becomes surprisingly tender and opens up about his feelings — the vegetable equivalent of a wine-fueled heart-to-heart at 2 AM.

His greatest fear: being mistaken for a zucchini. The rivalry is centuries old and neither side remembers how it started.

Bell Pepper is that friend who shows up unannounced, brings way too much food, and won't leave until you've had a good time. She comes in four colors because she can't commit to a single personality.

Green is her "I woke up like this" phase — slightly bitter, unripe, still figuring things out. Red is her main character era — sweet, confident, matured. Yellow and orange are her experimental phases that she doesn't talk about.

She's hollow inside but she fills that void with seeds of ambition. A true empty vessel that makes the loudest noise.

Cabbage is a Russian nesting doll made of vegetable. Layers upon layers upon layers — and just when you think you've reached the core, there's another layer you didn't account for.

He's a stoic philosopher who believes in slow fermentation as a path to enlightenment. "Kimchi is not a food," he teaches. "Kimchi is a journey." He aged 21 days in a clay pot once and came back speaking only in proverbs.

He's great at parties because he gets along with everyone — sausage, vinegar, mayonnaise, salt. He's the vegetable equivalent of "I can sit with anyone at lunch."

Onion makes everyone cry and she's perfectly okay with that. She contains multitudes — literally, layer after layer of suppressed emotions. She's the vegetable equivalent of a soap opera star who faints dramatically at every plot twist.

She has a very close relationship with Garlic (they text daily) but a complicated one with Potato (they're both starchy, there's territory issues).

If you cut her, she releases sulfuric compounds that make your eyes water. "If I'm going down," she says, "I'm taking everyone's mascara with me." Legend has it she was once asked "Why are you so pungent?" and she replied, "Why are you so basic?"

Garlic is small, white, and unassuming — the vegetable equivalent of a quiet person in the corner who turns out to be a retired spy. He doesn't need to show off because his reputation precedes him. By about three rooms.

He's the reason vampires never became a dominant species. He single-handedly saved humanity and asks for nothing in return — except to be thrown into hot olive oil at every opportunity.

His personal motto: "A clove a day keeps the exorcist away." He has exactly one friend (Onion) and one enemy (anyone who uses pre-minced garlic in a jar). "That's not garlic," he fumes. "That's a war crime in brine."

Zucchini has a productivity problem. He grows so fast that if you blink during harvest season, you'll come back to a vegetable the size of a baseball bat that's already written a memoir and started a podcast.

He's the overachiever in every group project — the one who finishes his part and then does everyone else's too, just to "make sure it's done right." Other vegetables find him exhausting but undeniable.

Deep down, he knows he's just a cucumber that went to a different summer camp. But he's made peace with his elongated destiny. "I'm not a gourd," he says. "I'm a lifestyle."

Potato is the only vegetable that has been to space, survived a famine, been turned into vodka, and still stays humble enough to be happy as french fries. He is the everyman of the produce aisle — plain on the outside, infinite potential within.

His greatest achievement? The Great Irish Famine made him a reluctant superstar. "I didn't ask for this fame," he says, tuberously blushing. "I just showed up and fed everyone."

He can be fried, baked, mashed, roasted, boiled, or turned into a spirit. No other vegetable has this kind of range. He's the Meryl Streep of the root family. And he'd never tell you this himself, but he's the only vegetable with a dedicated global holiday.
